Saracens slay Quins
A number of injuries and unforced errors saw a Quins side battered and bruised at the Stoop as Saracens make it three wins out of three in the Guinness Premiership.
Although the first half ended in a 6-6 draw it was Quins who had the slight upper hand and looked the most likely side to score in what was once again a first half decided by the two kickers, Nick Evans and Derick Hougaard.
Nick Evans put the home side ahead after just 8 minutes gone on the clock after a penalty was awarded to Quins when Saracens were penalised for killing the ball. Evans was instrumental in the first real try scoring opportunity moments later; an impressive chip and chase and a firing pass to George Lowe saw the young winger caught just short of the line. Minutes later (18 mins) Evans kicked his second successful penalty and Quins stretched their lead. 6-0
A Quins knock on from the re-start saw Saracens camped on Quins’ line and even after a powerful defensive scrum Quins could not stop Neil de Cock’s pass to, Derick Hougaard. The Saracens fly-half tightened the gap with a well placed drop goal (22 mins). 6-3.
Nick Easter looked to have brought the life back into the Quins attack with a thundering break through the Saracens defence. Carrying what seemed like half of the visiting team, Easter was eventually brought to his knees before getting back to his feet and carrying on towards the line. The offload to Chris Robshaw saw the flanker power over the try line, only to be denied the try by referee Chris White after he deemed it to be held up. The killer blow from the resulting 5 metre scrum could not be administered and Saracens cleared the threat.
This was the last real opportunity for Quins and, after Hougaard kicked his second 3 points of the afternoon, the two teams went in at half time with equal points on the board.
Just four minutes gone in the second half and Saracens took the lead with the first and only try of the game. Quins found themselves facing a one man overlap, and a smooth pass from Andy Saull put Kameli Ratuvou over in the right hand corner. Hougaard converted. 6-13.
With Saracens pulling away, Quins just could not seem to find an answer, and a number of unforced individual errors saw an element of frustration creeping into the side. Quins could only respond with one final Evans penalty before Saracens cleaned up the game with two more penalties and a drop goal from Hougaard. 9-22
